Significance: The HIV-1/ HIV-2 Antibody Differentiation test discriminates between HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies. Results for each type are reported. A negative result indicates absence of detectable HIV antibodies; however, a negative test result does not preclude infection with HIV.
Special Instructions: A recommendation to order HIV-1 nucleic-acid testing on a separate specimen will be made for certain results. This multi-test algorithm for the diagnosis of HIV is endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Association of Public Health Laboratories. The HIV-1/HIV-2 Antibody Differentiation test is not approved for use to screen blood, plasma, cell, or tissue donors.
