MDL DNA Fingerprint Analysis ()

Department: Molecular Diagnostics
Test Synonym(s): LAB6086, Identity, Genetics
CPT Codes: 81265
Methodology: Analysis of DNA Polymorphisms for the identification of known versus unknown cells (Identity/Discrimination Between Samples) by fluorescent PCR and evaluated by capillary electrophoresis
Tube Type: Lavender top (EDTA)
Specimen: Known and unknown samples required for testing: Blood ; paraffin embedded tissue: block, 5-10 unstained slides or 5 curls (10 micron thick with accompanying before and after cut H & E slides); or purified DNA - 1 microgram (NOTE: refer to Reasons for Rejection for DNA extraction criteria)
Pediatric Requirements: 2 microtainers
Volume: 1 tube
Minimum Volume: 2 microtainers; purified DNA - 100ng
Temperature: EDTA: room temperature or refrigerated; purified DNA: refrigerate or freeze; paraffin block: room temperature
Stability: EDTA - Room temperature: 2 days, Refrigerated: 7 days; Purified DNA - indefinitely @ -70C; Paraffin block - indefinitely
Reasons for Rejection: Client will be notified by Molecular Diagnostics Lab if specimen is rejected. Purified DNA - externally extracted nucleic acid received for clinical testing only accepted from CLIA-certified laboratories or laboratories meeting equivalent requirements as determined by College of American Pathologists (CAP) and/ or CMS. Documentation stating that the DNA was extracted in a CLIA lab will be required and should accompany the DNA specimen. DNA samples received from facilities not meeting requirement will be rejected. The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory medical director will contact the referral facility.
Days Performed: Monday - Friday
Times Performed: Batched
TAT: 7 days
Significance: Analysis of DNA for 15 independently segregating polymorphic sites and 1 gender specific marker for DNA fingerprinting to determine the percentage of known vs unknown cells in a sample.
Special Instructions: Call or email the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at 615-343-8121 or moleculardiagnosticlab@vumc.org if assistance is needed for specimen submission or if the patient has received a transfusion in the prior 2 weeks or has a history of a stem cell transplant.

Search Help

Search Options for the Test Directory:

1. Enter the test name in the Keyword search field.
Hint: You can also enter any part of the test name to expand the search.
(Example: you can type "west" or "sed" or "rate" to find Westergren Sedimentation Rate)

2. Enter the Vanderbilt Test Code, if known.

3. Choose one of the letter boxes to display a list of all test names and keywords starting with that letter.
