Significance: PSA is used to assist in diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer. When used as an initial screening test, there is no universally accepted normal range for PSA. The PSA value should be interpreted in light of factors such as age, race, family history of prostate cancer, digital rectal examination result, and result of prior prostate biopsy. For more information on calculating prostate cancer based on these factors, see the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial risk calculator at: http://deb.uthscsa.edu/URORiskCalc/Pages/uroriskcalc.jsp. Patient results determined by assays using different manufacturers for methods may not be comparable.
