Significance: This assay detects multiple zoonotic non-variola orthopoxviruses, including monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is currently the only circulating orthopoxvirus. Results must be interpreted in the clinical context. A positive result can be interpreted as indicating monkeypox infection in the appropriate clinical context.
Special Instructions: Vesicles contain the highest amount of Monkeypox Virus. Submit swab of lesion. The following lesion locations are acceptable - skin, oral, genital and rectal. Swab multiple sites with individual swabs. Ensure appropriate PPE is worn when collecting specimens.
