Cytology Non-Gyn/FNA VUMC (FNA)

Methodology: Three methods: 1) Our pathologists can perform the FNA procedure if the lesion is palpable, call lab to schedule at 615-322-2721, 2) we can send a cytotechnologist to assist with FNA to determine adequacy, or 3) clinician can collect and submit specimen to lab. Call lab for assistance at 615-322-2721. For after-hours contact the surgical pathologist fellow via the hospital operator.
Tube Type: Conical tube with RPMI. For after-hours saline in a clean specimen container (glass containers will not be accepted) may be used for non-suspected leukemia/lymphoma cases. Call the lab 615-322-2721
Specimen: Tissue or specimen obtained by a fine needle. Call the lab for assistance at 615-322-2721
Minimum Volume: Obtain as much as clinical judgement allows.
Temperature: Refrigeration is optimal. Call lab for assistance at 615-322-2721.
Reasons for Rejection: Mislabeled specimen, specimen received in a glass container, received in syringes with needles attached, specimen leaked in transit, insufficient fluid for processing, or pre-stained smears.
Days Performed: Monday - Friday; closed major holidays
Times Performed: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
TAT: 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) for cases without cell block or special stains; cases with cell block or special stains may require a longer turn-around time.
Significance: Provide body site, need patient history of prior or suspected malignancy; i.e., carcinoma, melanoma, lymphoma, etc.
Special Instructions: Palpable FNA or FNA for adequacy 1. Place Epic order for Cytology Non-Gyn/FNA. 2. Call the lab at 615-322-2721. 3. Have patient labels available when Cytology arrives.Clinic collect FNA 1. Place Epic order for Cytology Non-Gyn/FNA. 2. Indicate specimen source when completing the collection task in Epic. 3. Specimen vial is to be labeled with generic ADT label. 4. Please send Epic requisition and specimen vial to the lab. Please call the lab at 615-322-2721 for assistance before collecting an FNA specimen. For after-hour procedures please contact the surgical pathologist fellow via the hospital operator for collection instructions.
