Methodology: Histological preparation and microscopic interpretation Special stains or procedures may be required at request of pathologist
Specimen: Submit in 10 % neutral buffered formalin. Exceptions: Imunofluorescence submit in Michel's Fixative Lymph Nodes submit in saline. EM submit in gluteraldehyde
Volume: Fixative volume at least 10X that of specimen
Temperature: If specimen is submitted in saline, transport STAT with cold pack or on ice (not dry ice). All other specimens transport at room temperature.
Stability: Fix tissue immediately. Once fixed specimen is stable indefinitely. Protect against leakage. Note: Breast biopsies must fix in 10 % formalin a minimum of 6 hours and a maximum of 72 hours for HER2 and ER/PR. Shorter or longer fixation may impact res
Reasons for Rejection: Incorrect or incomplete patient identification. Label both the test requisition and container with 2 patient identifiers.
Days Performed: Monday - Friday
Times Performed: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
TAT: 2 working days from accession date if not complex. May be longer if complex.
Significance: Significant or unusual findings are communicated
Special Instructions: Complete VPLS Test Requisition. Formalin is hazardous and should be handled with care as to not leak. Seal containers completely and submit in specimen bag. Submit completed requisition in pocket of bag or a second bag placed in specimen bag. Include pertinent clinical data and billing information on the test requisition
