Aldosterone/Renin Mass Ratio (ARN)

Department: Special Chemistry
Test Synonym(s): LAB5713, ARN, Aldosterone/Plasma Renin Ratio, ARR
Test Components: Aldosterone, Direct Renin/Renin Mass, Aldosterone/Renin Mass Ratio
CPT Codes: 82088, 84244
Methodology: Chemiluminescent Immunoassay
Reference Range: The Endocrine Society guidelines suggest an ARR greater than or equal to 5.7 is consistent with primary hyperaldosteronism (Funder JW et al. JCEM. 2016;101:1889-1916). Internal studies by the VUMC Special Chemistry laboratory have shown that an ARR greater than or equal to2.6 in conjuction with an aldosterone >15 ng/dL may be associated with hyperaldosteronism. Due to assay and biological variability, interpret this ratio in the context of the aldosterone result and interfering medications.
Tube Type: Lavender top (EDTA)
Specimen: Blood

Alternate Specimen: None
Pediatric Requirements: 4 lavender top microtainers
Volume: 8 mL
Minimum Volume: 2 Lavender tops (Pediatric=4 lavender top microtainers)
Temperature: Must be centrifuged in room temperature centrifuge and separated immediately. Do not refrigerate.
Stability: Plasma stable 72 hours at room temp or 56 days frozen (-20C)
Reasons for Rejection: Refrigeration of sample
Days Performed: Tuesday and Friday
Times Performed: 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
TAT: 5 days
Significance: Primarily used in conjunction with aldosterone as a screen for primary hyperaldosteronism (aldosterone/renin mass ratio).

Special Instructions:  Do not refrigerate samples during collection, transport, or storage. Collect, process, and centrifuge at room temperature.

Search Help

Search Options for the Test Directory:

1. Enter the test name in the Keyword search field.
Hint: You can also enter any part of the test name to expand the search.
(Example: you can type "west" or "sed" or "rate" to find Westergren Sedimentation Rate)

2. Enter the Vanderbilt Test Code, if known.

3. Choose one of the letter boxes to display a list of all test names and keywords starting with that letter.
