Volume: Based on patient weight; <5 kg: Collect 1mL in Pediatric bottle; 5-13 kg: Collect 4 mL in Pediatric bottle and 4mL in anaerobic bottle (if ordered); 14-25 kg: Collect 5mL in Pediatric bottle and 5mL in anaerobic bottle (if ordered); 26-39 kg: Collect 8mL in Pediatric bottle and 8mL in anaerobic bottle (if ordered); >40 kg: Collect 10mL in Pediatric bottle and 10mL in anaerobic bottle
Minimum Volume: 3 mL in Pediatric bottle (unless <5 kg)
Temperature: Room temperature
Stability: Send to lab immediately.
Reasons for Rejection: Broken bottle, Not labeled, Clotted, Over or under filled, Excessive delay in transport
Days Performed: Daily
Times Performed: 24/7
TAT: 6 days for negative cultures. Time varies for positive cultures.
Significance: Positive cultures will be notified through Lab Alerts or called/epaged. Molecular testing for identification and resistance markers is automatically performed directly from the positive bottle on the first positive culture for each patient. The culture will also be performed as usual. Isolates are saved for 6 months in case further workup is needed.
Special Instructions: Collect per MD orders. There will be separate charges for organism identification and susceptibility testing when appropriate. If anaerobic cultures are required, draw a Bactec Lytic/10 Anaerobic bottle along with the Pediatric bottle. Label Anaerobic bottle with generic ADT label.
