Methodology: Culture. Gram stain not included.
Tube Type: BD urine vacutainer (gray top boric acid transport tube) at 20-25 °C or sterile, leak-proof container at 2-8 °Cn (leak-proof container must be delivered to Microbiology within 2 hours of collection)
Specimen: Urine: midstream, catheterized, cystoscopic, or suprapubic. Indicate source of specimen.
Volume: 4 mL
Minimum Volume: 3 mL (Boric Acid tube)
Temperature: Room temperature
Stability: Boric acid tube: ambient for 48 hours. Other containers: ambient for 2 hours; refrigerated for 24 hours.
Reasons for Rejection: Non sterile or leaking container, excessive delay in transport.
Days Performed: Daily
TAT: 1 day for negative
Special Instructions: There will be separate charges for organism identification and susceptibility testing when appropriate.
