Significance: EBV has been implicated as a cause of lymphoproliferative diseases in immunocompromised patients, including post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLDs). PTLDs cause a high rate of mortality in transplant recipients. Quantitation of the systemic EBV load may provide a highly sensitive and specific method to predict the development and monitoring of EBV disease.
