Tube Type: Light green top PST (Lithium Heparin with gel)
Specimen: Plasma
Alternate Specimen: Red top (no gel)
Pediatric Requirements: 1 light green top microtainer
Volume: 1 mL plasma
Minimum Volume: 1 light green top
Temperature: Refrigerated
Stability: Room temperature: 2 days; Refrigerated: 8 days; Frozen: 56 days
Reasons for Rejection: Samples from infants less than 60 days old. There is a potential for elevated DHEA-S results in newborns as DHEA-S values are influenced by both maternal and placental steroids. During fetal adrenal steroidogenesis, there is a high degree of sulphurylation with a low amount of hydorlyzing enzymes. Potentially cross reacting steroids may be present.
Days Performed: Daily
Times Performed: Continuous
Special Instructions: Specimens should be centrifuged immediately.
